This workshop has been designed to give you a first exposure to working with Powertex. Powertex is a universal medium. In this class we shall use it as a fabric hardener. If you want to give your box a particular theme you need to bring your own embellishments and/or fabric to the workshop. All other materials are included.

WHAT IS POWERTEX?

Powertex is a universal medium that started out as a fabric hardener and  is an environmentally friendly water-based liquid medium. Powertex can harden absorbent materials such as textiles, paper, cardboard and leather. Natural fibres work best. Powertex can be easily combined with clays, concrete, stone, ceramics, wood, sand and paper pulp. Powertex is used for making sculptures, paintings, decorative objects and jewelry. It comes in 8 colours and a transparent version. Powertex Transparent is a white liquid that dries to a mat finish showing the original patterns and colours from the hardened material.

Once dry your artwork can be decorated by dry brushing it with pigment powder and mat varnish which makes it waterproof. Favourite powders are always the bronze, golden, copper and silver. They create the most lush effect. It can also be painted with oil paints, acrylics and latex. Once your work has dried inside for 3 weeks it can go outside and is weather hard.

Powertex air-dries but warm air from a blow dryer or radiator accelerates the drying time. In workshops this is often done in a hot box and oh boy does it get hot!

The introduction workshops are a great way to experience what it is like to work with the gloopy sticky stuff. You will have a finished piece to take home and you will be back for more!

Powertex is absolutely safe for humans and animals and meets the highest European and American safety standards. Powertex has undergone extensive testing and has been awarded the AP Seal.
